Mitigation of urbanization effects on aquatic ecosystems by synchronous ecological restoration

چکیده
Ecosystem degradation and biodiversity loss have been caused by economic booms in developing countries over recent decades. In response, ecosystem restoration projects advanced some but the effectiveness of different approaches indicators at large spatio-temporal scales (i.e., whole catchments) remains poorly understood. This study assessed a diverse array 440 aquatic including wastewater treatment, constructed wetlands, plant/algae salvage dredging contaminated sediments implemented maintained from 2007 to 2017 across more than 2000 km2 northwest Taihu basin (Yixing, China). Synchronized investigations water quality invertebrate communities were conducted before after restoration. Our analysis showed that even though there was rapid urbanization this time, nutrient concentrations (NH4+-N, TN, TP) biological indices benthic (taxonomic richness, Shannon diversity, sensitive taxon density) improved significantly most area. Improvements associated with type project, targeting pollution-sources leading clearest responses compared those remediating pollution sinks. However, locations, recovery biotic appears lag behind nutrients (e.g., nitrogen phosphorus), likely reflecting long-distance re-colonization routes for invertebrates given level pre-restoration catchment. Overall, suggests ecological damage development China could potentially be mitigated massive investments synchronized catchments, although these effects expected enhanced if rates reduced same time.

Understanding the drivers and implications of anthropogenic disturbance of ecological connectivity is a key concern for the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem processes. Here, we review human activities that affect the movements and dispersal of aquatic organisms, including damming of rivers, river regulation, habitat loss and alteration, human-assisted dispersal of organisms and climat...
متن کاملEffects on aquatic ecosystems
Regarding the effects of UV-B radiation on aquatic ecosystems, recent scientific and public interest has focused on marine primary producers and on the aquatic web, which has resulted in a multitude of studies indicating mostly detrimental effects of UV-B radiation on aquatic organisms. The interest has expanded to include ecologically significant groups and major biomass producers using mesoco...
متن کاملEffects of Urbanization on Stream Ecosystems
Studies on the effects of urbanization on stream ecosystems have evolved from documenting impacts to attempting to understand the driving factors responsible for stream conditions. In 1999, the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Water-Quality Assessment Program initiated a series of pilot studies to assess the effects of urbanization on physical habitat, biotic assemblages (algal, fish, inverteb...
متن کاملEffects of urbanization and urban stream restoration on the physical and biological structure of stream ecosystems.
Streams, as low-lying points in the landscape, are strongly influenced by the stormwaters, pollutants, and warming that characterize catchment urbanization. River restoration projects are an increasingly popular method for mitigating urban insults. Despite the growing frequency and high expense of urban stream restoration projects, very few projects have been evaluated to determine whether they...
متن کاملTHE IMPACTS OF IMPERVIOUSNESS ON AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS: An annotated bibliography on the effects of a key stressor of urbanization on the aquatic ecosystem
Introduction As the population of California continues to grow, new communities emerge and existing ones expand. Impervious surfaces, including roads, houses, and commercial buildings, are a hallmark of this urban expansion. These impervious surfaces have significant impacts on local watersheds. Impervious cover (IC) affects the hydrology, chemistry, and biotic integrity of aquatic ecosystems. ...
